I am Elisabeth Afseth-Millar, and I have worked as a secondary maths teacher at a range of schools in Gloucestershire over the last 7 years, teaching at all levels; from mixed ability year 7 to Further Maths A-level.
After a career in investment banking in London, I moved to Cheltenham with my two young sons in 2013 and retrained (PGCE) to teach maths at secondary level.
I have degrees from The London School of Economics, B Sc (Econ)
University of Oxford, M Phil (Economics)
University of Worcester, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary Maths)
I have also undertaken several training courses to support neurodivergent students, something I have a personal as well as professional interest in.
Key Stage 3 tuition (England and Wales school years 7-9, age 11-14):
I can help with strengthening the fundamentals ahead of the GCSE years; that might involve covering gaps from primary school, help you move up a set or two at school or provide extra challenges.
Key Stage 4 - GCSE tuition (School years 10-11, age 14-16):
Personalised programme to achieve your potential in the GCSE examinations.
GCSE to A-level Bridging Course:
Many students find the move from GCSE to A-level maths difficult; it doesn't have to be. I can help you prepare with some focussed tuition on specific topic areas.
A-level tuition:
Personalised programme to achieve your potential in the A-level examination and help secure the university or further education place you are after.
Small class (max 4 pupils) A-level:
A small class programme is available for home educated students, we have 2 hours of small group tuition + 1 hour of one-to-one each week. A standard 2 year programme and an accelerated 1 year programme available.
Other tuition:
Contact me for information about other types of maths tuition (International Baccalaureate, Further Maths etc).
These 55 minutes sessions are well suited for pupils who are being home educated or sixth form students who have free periods during the day
These 55 minutes session are best suited for pupils who can only attend after normal school time
Shorter tutorials can be suitable for those who struggle with longer sessions (though there are ways to make a longer lessons interesting enough!) but can also be used for one-off explanation to a specific maths problem.
Payments need to be received 24 hours prior to the session via bank transfer.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
I can do tutor sessions on-line or face-to-face. I am based in Cheltenham (UK).
Many pupils are worried about asking questions in front of their peers and it can be difficult for a teacher to have enough time for each pupil in a large class, so one-to-one sessions can have a big impact. Improvements can also have a big effect on confidence which makes maths more enjoyable. I can help by giving that one-to-one support and focussing on the topics your child is struggling with.
When you first contact me, we will have a conversation about what your child's needs are, and it will be personalised from there on, for example if your child is in the GCSE years and wants to boost their grade I might suggest they do a small test for me (or provide me with a copy of a suitable, recent school test), to let me gauge where support needs to be focussed. For ongoing support we may choose to spend part of the session on topics your child is doing at school at the moment, part on areas where we have identified further support would be beneficial.
For a pupil struggling with anxiety related to school and/or maths an open discussion with parents and student will be had at the start to tailor the tuition appropriately.
Many students find the move from GCSE to A-level challenging. I would recommend 5-10 tutor sessions to cover the GCSE topics that are important for A-levels. It is possible to get a very respectable grade at GCSE while still struggling with some of the harder algebra, surd and vector questions for example. Going over these ahead of starting A-level maths gives the student an advantage and is a great confidence booster. If your son/daughter has just started A-levels and is finding the pace fast, these sessions can be tailored to support and help them link the new knowledge to what they already know from GCSEs.
I can provide tutor session to stretch your son/daughter in maths if they are finding 'school maths' too easy or slow. I can also help provide resources they can work on in class if their teacher is amenable to them bringing these into school. Many teachers will want the work to be related to what they are doing with the rest of the class - this is perfectly possible while still making it challenging. I generally prefer working on higher level thinking and problem solving rather than pushing on through the curriculum as fast as possible.
Every student has unique needs for support. Tell us more about what you are hoping a tutor can do for you, and we will start on a plan to help you get what your child needs.
